Photoelasticity

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Photoelasticity is a technique used to study and visualize stress patterns in transparent materials and structures using polarized light. When a stressed material is placed between polarizing filters, the light passing through it creates coloured fringe patterns that correspond to areas of tension and compression.

In photography and scientific imaging, photoelasticity allows engineers, designers, and researchers to analyse mechanical stresses and identify potential points of failure. This method combines optics and imaging to provide a non-destructive way to measure structural integrity, making it valuable in both experimental mechanics and applied photography for technical documentation.
