Photogram

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A photogram is a photographic image created by placing an object directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing it to a light source. The areas blocked by the object remain white, while the exposed sections darken, producing a silhouette-like image. This simple yet striking technique has been explored by early photographic pioneers such as Thomas Wedgwood and William Fox Talbot, as well as by artists like the Surrealist Man Ray, who called his versions "Rayographs" or "Rayograms."

Photograms offer a unique, camera-free way to experiment with composition, light, and shadow. They are widely used in artistic photography, educational settings, and creative experimentation, allowing photographers and artists to produce abstract and visually compelling images without traditional lenses or cameras.
