Pigment

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A pigment is a colouring substance that is insoluble in the liquid medium with which it is combined. Unlike dyes, pigments do not dissolve but remain suspended, providing colour through reflection and absorption of light. Common examples include paints, poster colours, and inks used in artistic and printing applications.

In photography and imaging, pigments are often used in fine art prints, toners, and archival-quality inks, valued for their stability, richness of colour, and resistance to fading. The choice of pigment affects the vibrancy, durability, and longevity of the final image, making it a key component in both traditional and modern image reproduction techniques.
