Pixel Dropping

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Pixel dropping is a subsampling technique used in digital imaging to reduce the total number of pixels in an image. This is done by systematically removing every nth pixel from the scan, effectively lowering the image resolution while maintaining a general visual representation.

Pixel dropping is often used in image processing, preview generation, and applications where smaller file sizes or faster processing speeds are needed. While it reduces detail, the method can be useful for efficient storage, transmission, or analysis of large digital images without requiring complex algorithms.
