Pixel Modulation

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Pixel modulation is a printing technique in which the brightness or tonal value of an image is controlled by adjusting the size of individual pixels rather than their intensity. Larger pixels produce darker areas, while smaller pixels create lighter tones, allowing for smooth gradations and accurate reproduction of images.

This process is commonly used in digital printing, halftone reproduction, and inkjet technologies to enhance image quality, improve detail, and maintain consistent tonal transitions. By manipulating pixel size, pixel modulation helps achieve sharper, more realistic prints with high fidelity to the original image.
