Plasma Display

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A plasma display is a type of flat-panel screen that contains gas sealed between two glass panels. When specific horizontal (x-axis) and vertical (y-axis) electrodes are electrically charged, the gas in the targeted area becomes energised and emits light, creating illuminated pixels that form the displayed image.

Plasma displays were widely used in televisions and professional monitors because of their ability to produce bright images, deep contrast, and wide viewing angles. Although largely replaced by modern LCD and OLED technologies, plasma screens played an important role in the development of high-quality digital display systems for photography, video, and multimedia applications.
