Power Reduction

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Power reduction is a flash photography mode that allows the photographer to lower the output of a flash unit, often to half, quarter, or even 1/64 of its full power. This control enables precise management of lighting intensity, helping to prevent overexposure and achieve the desired illumination for a scene.

Advanced flashguns often provide fine-grained power reduction, making it particularly useful in macro photography, close-up work, or situations where subtle, controlled lighting is required. By adjusting flash output, photographers can maintain proper exposure while creatively shaping shadows and highlights.
