Program Exposure

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Program exposure is a fully automatic camera mode in which both the aperture and shutter speed are set automatically by the camera to achieve correct exposure. This mode, often indicated as “P” on camera dials and panels, allows photographers to focus on composition and subject matter without manually adjusting exposure settings.

Program exposure is ideal for quick shooting situations, casual photography, or when lighting conditions are rapidly changing. While convenient, it still allows many cameras to offer exposure compensation and other adjustments, giving photographers a balance of automation and creative control over their images.
