Protective Toning

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Protective toning is a photographic process applied to black-and-white prints to increase their archival permanence and protect them from fading over time. Common toners include selenium and gold, which not only enhance longevity but can also subtly alter the tonal quality of the print, adding warmth, richness, or neutrality.

Protective toning is widely used in fine art and professional photography, where preserving the quality and appearance of prints for decades is essential. Beyond protection, this technique allows photographers to achieve aesthetic effects while ensuring their work remains durable and stable under varying environmental conditions.
