Pull Processing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Pull processing is a film development technique used to decrease the effective speed of a photographic film, often to correct overexposure or compensate for an incorrectly set ISO. This is typically achieved by reducing development time, lowering the temperature of the developer, or using a weaker chemical solution.

Photographers use pull processing to control contrast, retain highlight detail, and achieve a specific tonal effect in the final negative or print. It is a valuable darkroom skill that provides creative flexibility and precise control over image quality, especially in challenging lighting conditions.
