Pushing

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Pushing is a photographic technique in which the normal ISO speed of a film is intentionally increased, causing the film to be underexposed during shooting. The underexposed latent image is then developed for a longer time or at a higher temperature to compensate, effectively increasing the films working speed.

Pushing is commonly used in low-light conditions or fast-action photography, allowing photographers to capture images at higher shutter speeds than the available light would normally permit. While it can produce increased contrast and more pronounced grain, it provides a practical solution for achieving correctly exposed images in challenging lighting scenarios.
