Resolution

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Resolution refers to the amount of detail a digital camera can capture, determined by the total number of pixels recorded by the camera’s light-sensitive sensor (CCD or CMOS). Each pixel represents a tiny portion of the image, and together they form the complete digital photograph. For example, an image may have 350,000 or one million pixels, with higher pixel counts generally offering greater detail.

Resolution is a key factor in image quality, but it also depends on the sharpness of the scene captured on the sensor. Cameras with more pixels can produce larger prints, allow for more cropping flexibility, and capture finer details, making resolution an essential consideration for photographers aiming for professional-quality images.
