Rimlighting

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Rimlighting is a photographic lighting technique in which the subject appears outlined or highlighted against a dark background. The light source is typically positioned above and behind the subject, creating a glowing edge or “rim” of light that separates the subject from the background.

Unlike conventional backlighting, where the background is usually bright, rimlighting emphasises contours, adds depth, and enhances the three-dimensional appearance of the subject. Photographers often use this technique for portraits, product photography, or creative compositions to produce striking, dramatic images with clear subject separation.
