Roof Prism

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A roof prism is a design used in binoculars that allows for a straight-tubed, streamlined body, making the binoculars slim and lightweight. Unlike Porro prism designs, where the prisms are arranged at 90 degrees and produce a stepped, bulkier shape, roof prism binoculars align the prisms in a straight line for a more compact and portable design.

Roof prism binoculars are popular among hikers, birdwatchers, and photographers who need high-quality optics in a convenient, easy-to-carry format. While they are generally more complex to manufacture than Porro prisms, they offer the advantages of durability, precise alignment, and a modern, sleek appearance.
