Sabattier Effect

SWPP Photographic Glossary

The Sabattier effect, also known as pseudo-solarization, is a photographic phenomenon in which an image develops partially as a positive and partially as a negative. This occurs when a photographic emulsion is briefly re-exposed to white light during development and then allowed to continue processing.

The Sabattier effect produces striking, surreal images with distinctive edge tones and partial reversal of tones, often used creatively in black-and-white photography. Understanding this effect allows photographers to experiment with alternative darkroom techniques to achieve unique textures, contrasts, and artistic visual outcomes.
