Safelight

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A safelight is a filtered light used in a darkroom to provide illumination while handling light-sensitive photographic materials. Different coloured filters are used depending on the type of material: orange safelights are common for most black-and-white papers, red for orthochromatic films, brown for variable contrast papers, and deep green for colour materials.

Safelights allow photographers to see and work without exposing the photosensitive surfaces to unwanted light, helping prevent fogging or loss of image quality. Proper use of safelights is essential for precise darkroom work, ensuring consistent development and high-quality photographic results.
