Saturation

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Saturation is a measure of the intensity or strength of colour within a photograph. Highly saturated images display rich, vivid colours, while low saturation results in softer, muted tones with a more subdued appearance. When saturation is reduced significantly, colours move closer to grey and the image can appear almost monochrome.

Most photo editing software allows photographers to adjust saturation to enhance or soften the mood of an image. Increasing saturation can create bold, dramatic photographs with vibrant colours, while decreasing saturation can produce a subtle, artistic effect. Understanding saturation is essential for photographers looking to control colour balance, atmosphere, and visual impact in post-processing.
