Secondary Colours

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Secondary colours are colours created by mixing two of the three primary colours (red, green, and blue in light, or cyan, magenta, and yellow in pigment). In traditional colour theory, the secondary colours are yellow, magenta, and cyan, and they are also considered complementary colours because each pairs with a primary colour to neutralise it.

In photography and digital imaging, understanding secondary colours is essential for colour balancing, correcting, and creative composition. These colours help photographers and designers manipulate contrast, harmony, and visual impact, whether in prints, digital images, or artistic projects.
