Self Toning Paper

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Self toning paper is an early photographic paper coated with silver chloride that was used for contact printing in daylight. Unlike modern papers, it could produce images without the need for separate toning processes, making it convenient for photographers of the time.

Though now largely obsolete, self toning paper played a significant role in the development of early photographic printing techniques. It allowed photographers to create direct positives or negatives quickly, and its historical use highlights the evolution of photographic materials and processes.
