Separation Negatives

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Separation negatives are black-and-white negatives, usually produced in sets of three or four, captured through coloured filters that isolate specific parts of the colour spectrum-typically red, green, and blue. Each negative records the tonal values corresponding to its respective colour channel.

These negatives are essential in photomechanical colour printing and dye transfer processes, where they are combined to reproduce the original image’s full range of colours accurately. Understanding separation negatives is key for photographers and printers working with traditional colour reproduction techniques and for achieving precise colour control in high-quality prints.
