Serial Interface

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A serial interface is a type of computer connection that allows peripheral devices-such as a mouse, modem, or some digital cameras-to communicate with a computer. Data is transferred serially, meaning one bit at a time in sequence, through a single connection cable.

While slower than modern parallel or USB interfaces, serial connections were widely used in early computer systems and photography equipment for reliable data transfer. Understanding serial interfaces is useful for photographers working with legacy devices or specialised hardware, ensuring proper connectivity and data management in digital imaging workflows.
