Side Lighting

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Side lighting occurs when a light source illuminates the subject from the side relative to the camera’s position. This technique creates strong shadows and highlights, adding depth, texture, and three-dimensional modeling to the subject.

Photographers often use side lighting in portrait, still life, and product photography to emphasize contours, shapes, and surface details. By carefully positioning the light, it’s possible to produce dramatic, visually engaging images that enhance mood and dimensionality.
