A sky filter is an older photographic term for a filter with a graduated density across its surface. It is designed to darken bright areas of the sky while leaving the foreground relatively unaffected, helping to balance exposure in landscape photography.
Although largely replaced by modern digital techniques, sky filters were historically important for enhancing contrast, emphasising cloud detail, and producing more visually appealing skies in film photography.
