Spirit Level

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A spirit level is a tool used in photography to ensure that a camera or tripod head is perfectly horizontal before taking a photograph. It helps photographers maintain straight horizons and accurate alignment, making it especially useful when precise composition is required. A spirit level typically contains a small liquid-filled tube with an air bubble that indicates whether the camera is level when centred between guide marks.

Spirit levels are particularly valuable in architectural and landscape photography, where keeping vertical lines straight and horizons level is essential for a professional-looking result. Although some tripods include built-in spirit levels, many do not, so photographers often use accessory versions that slide into the camera’s hot shoe or attach via the shutter release thread. Even a simple hardware-store spirit level can be used effectively for this purpose if needed.
