Stand

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A stand is another term for a tripod, a three-legged support used to stabilise cameras during photography. Stands are essential for achieving sharp images in situations where long exposures, telephoto lenses, or precise composition are required. By keeping the camera steady, a stand prevents motion blur and allows photographers to use slower shutter speeds without sacrificing image quality.

Tripods or stands are particularly important in landscape, architectural, macro, and studio photography. Many stands include adjustable legs, a centre column, and a head that can tilt or rotate to achieve accurate framing. While the term “stand” may be used more traditionally or in certain instructional contexts, it refers to the same equipment that enables photographers to maintain control and stability in their work.
