Stand Camera

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A stand camera is a type of large-format camera that is usually mounted on a rigid, fixed stand rather than a portable tripod. These cameras are designed for situations where stability, precise control, and high image quality are essential, such as studio photography, architectural work, or detailed product photography.

Stand cameras often allow movements such as tilt, shift, rise, and fall to control perspective and focus with great accuracy. Because they are mounted on a solid stand, they minimise vibration and camera movement, making them ideal for long exposures and extremely detailed images. While less portable than smaller cameras, stand cameras provide photographers with exceptional precision and control, which is why they remain a valuable tool for large-format and technical photography.
