Test Strip

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A test strip is a photographic tool used for the trial-and-error method of determining the correct exposure when printing an image. Small sections of photographic paper are exposed to different amounts of light over key areas of the image, allowing photographers to evaluate which exposure produces the desired result.

Using test strips helps photographers achieve accurate tones, contrast, and detail in the final print without wasting large sheets of paper. This technique is especially valuable in darkroom printing, providing a controlled and efficient way to refine exposure settings and ensure professional-quality results.
