Time Exposure

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Time exposure is a photographic technique that refers to any exposure longer than the camera’s standard fixed shutter speeds. The shutter remains open for a duration determined by the photographer, allowing more light to reach the film or sensor and capturing effects that are not possible with regular exposures.

Time exposures are commonly used in low-light photography, night scenes, light painting, and capturing motion blur in landscapes, traffic, or water. Mastering time exposure allows photographers to create dramatic and creative images, extending the expressive possibilities beyond standard shutter settings.
