Veil

SWPP Photographic Glossary

In photography, a veil refers to a uniformly distributed silver deposit on a photographic image that does not form part of the intended image. This effect is also commonly known as fog and can reduce overall contrast and image clarity.

Photographers aim to minimise veiling by controlling exposure, handling film properly, and maintaining chemical solutions. Understanding veiling helps ensure sharper, more accurate prints and reduces the risk of unwanted image degradation during development.
