Virtual Memory

SWPP Photographic Glossary

Virtual memory is a computer system technique where disk space on a hard drive is used and identified as RAM by the operating system or software. This allows applications to use more memory than is physically available in the system.

Since hard drive memory is generally less expensive than adding physical RAM, virtual memory provides an economical way to increase available memory and improve the performance of applications. Understanding virtual memory helps photographers and digital editors optimise computer performance when working with large image files or complex software.
