Zoetrope

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A zoetrope is an early device used to create the illusion of continuous motion. It consists of a rotating drum with slits through which a sequence of still images is viewed rapidly, making the images appear to move.

Photographers, animators, and historians study zoetropes to understand the origins of motion pictures and animation. Understanding this device provides insight into early visual storytelling and the development of cinematic techniques.
