"I started my career in the 1970s, working in a camera store in Harvard Square near Boston, close to the Harvard University campus," says Rick. "During my time there, I had the opportunity to meet many photographers and photojournalists. I was enthralled with the concept of taking off at a moment's notice and covering breaking news. The idea of being part of history and getting paid to do it sounded like a dream come true. I was fortunate that one of the photographers took me under his wing and helped me to achieve this ambition. He explained the fundamentals of photojournalism to me and taught me the craft. Ever since then, I have been a freelance photojournalist.
"Thereafter I spent much of my time following the news and being self-motivated. I discovered that I was fascinated by politics and in particular presidential campaigns. As New Hampshire was the initial stomping ground for politicians running for president (and not too far from where I lived, in Boston), I began my journey into my now lifetime passion of covering presidential elections. I've now photographed every president from Jimmy Carter onwards.
